Our Process

We like to keep restorative work to a minimum. What does this mean? It means we won’t over do it.

We won’t try to talk the customer into doing unnecessary work to their pieces. Restoration work will not affect the value as long as it’s done properly. This seems to be a concern that many people have and no one understands this better than we do.

So if you’re waited tot have your antiques restored, wait no more. Contact us, schedule a visit (fee applies) to discuss your options. Our quality repair and restoration will not diminish the value of your furniture piece, it will help preserve it.

We hold the secret to stop veneers from chipping and blistering, and we keep a large collection in stock to match any missing parts, if you have missing Inlay we’ll make it from scratch using real wood , not wood filler.

Carvings, mouldings, turnings, overlays, wood bending, hand cut dovetails, mortise and tenon, pegs, posts, columns, crowns, pediments, etc, all made in shop, we can’t list every item from a long list, please call to discuss your particular needs, you won’t be disappointed.

Antique Furniture Restoration for Maryland, Virginia, and DC

At Harry C. Johnson & Son Inc., we’ve been working on antique furniture long before it became trendy. It’s been over a hundred years now and in that time, we’ve seen just about every type of piece walk through our doors. Some need a simple touch-up. Others come in barely holding together. Either way, we treat each one like it matters, because it does.

We’re not just fixing up old furniture. We’re helping people hold onto family stories, history, and craftsmanship you don’t find anymore. That’s what good antique furniture restoration is really about.

Every Piece Has a Story – We Help It Last Longer

Antiques aren’t factory-made. Most of them were built by hand, meant to last, and crafted with care. But time takes its toll – joints loosen, finishes wear off, parts break. That’s where we come in.

When you bring a piece to us, we don’t jump straight into sanding or refinishing. First, we take a hard look at it. How’s it built? What materials were used? What kind of finish did it have originally? Our goal is to fix what’s wrong without stripping away the character that makes it special.

We repair, restore, and refinish using methods that respect the original craftsmanship. No shortcuts. No guesswork.

What We Actually Do – In Plain Terms

Here’s what antique furniture restoration means at our shop:

  • Tightening loose joints so your chairs or tables don’t wobble
  • Fixing cracked wood, broken legs, or damaged veneers
  • Bringing back original finishes or carefully refinishing if needed
  • Matching colors and wood grain by hand, not by formula
  • Replacing missing carvings, details, or hardware so they look right – not “new”
  • Cleaning up surface damage like scratches, rings, or stains
  • Restoring or replacing upholstery in a way that suits the piece

We don’t believe in rushing a job. Some repairs take time, and we’re fine with that.

We Work All Over Maryland, Virginia, and DC

We’ve worked on pieces from Baltimore to Northern Virginia to downtown DC. Whether it’s an antique inherited from family or something you picked up at an estate sale, we’re happy to take a look.

And if moving a fragile piece worries you, we’ve got that covered too – pickup and delivery are available across the DMV area.

Why People Keep Coming Back to Us

A lot of shops say they do antique furniture restoration. But for us, this isn’t a side service – it’s been the heart of our work for generations. We care about keeping the craftsmanship alive. We know the right way to restore a piece, and we never cut corners.

Our clients know we’ll be honest about what a piece needs, and we’ll do the job right the first time. That’s probably why so many people refer their friends and family to us.
